Mishawaka, Ind. --- The Bethel Pilots (3-5, 2-4) battle through and won a barnburner in the Goodman Gymnasium over the Goshen College Maple Leafs (2-5, 2-4) by a score of 3-2. Bethel Leads the US Highway 20 Cup series 6.50 to 3.00 with thirteen more matchups to go on the year.
Freshmen
Arthur Barreto and
Marcos Henrike led the offense and combined for 39 total kills. Barreto swung at a .250 clip with two service aces to his name and nine digs. Henrike had a double-double with 16 kills and 14 digs to round out a stellar performance in the rivalry game.
Henrike was not alone in great defensive play. Freshman
Ege Gul totaled 13 digs for the Pilots, and Bethel had 55 digs as a team.
There was a mutual struggle in serving as the Maple Leafs bested the Pilots from the service line 13-16, which kept the momentum flowing back and forth all night.
The Pilots are now 1-1 in five-set matches, which Saturday night marked the second match that had gone to five sets and improved their record to 2-3 at home in the Goodman Gymnasium.
