MISHAWAKA, Ind. --- The Bethel Pilots (6-6, 1-3) outlasted the IU-Kokomo Cougars (4-6, 1-0) in the Gates Gymnasium Saturday after a tight battle through the entirety of regulation for the Pilots' fifth win at home and fifth non-conference victory.
Isabel Scales went for her first career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds on 5-7 shooting from the floor.
Faith Davis was the leading scorer with 12 points on 4-7 shooting from beyond the arc and two rebounds.
Ellia Foster and
Gracie Lambes scored 11 points, with Foster shooting 4-9 from the floor and 2-5 from deep and Lambes going 4-9 from the floor and 1-1 from three-point range.
The Pilots forced 14 turnovers, which resulted in 18 of the 57 points scored, and 39 points came off the bench (68%).
In the early minutes, Bethel started down by seven, 11-4, at 5:51 before
Mariah Claywell sparked a 7-0 run with a triple at 5:10, followed by Scales' jumper at 3:28 and Lambes getting to the line and sinking both free throws to tie the game 11-11 at 2:28 in the first.
IUK failed to complete the three-point-play at 2:11 after being fouled on a layup to reclaim the lead 13-11, but Scales hit a layup with 13 seconds to go in the quarter and tied the game 13-13.
Olivia Nickerson gave the Pilots their first lead at 9:21 in the second off a layup, 15-13, and grew to 17-13 with Foster's jumper at 8:28.
The Cougars tied the game with back-to-back layups at 7:54 and 7:25, 17-17, then Foster answered with a three at 6:41, 20-17.
IUK took back the lead 26-22 from a three-point-play at 1:13 to go in the half but went into halftime with a two-point, 28-26 Cougar lead.
The Pilots gained the advantage back after Lambes' layup at 3:40 in the third before the game tied twice in the final minutes of the quarter, with Davis' splashing a three at 2:01 tied 39 all and Lambes completing a three-point-play with two seconds left in the third, 42-41.
Bethel took their largest lead of the game at 6:49 in the fourth, 50-43, with
Mariah Claywell's layup and again at 3:57 from Foster's triple, 54-47.
IUK had a three-point play with 35 seconds to go in regulation, still down by one, and Foster split a pair at the line with 10 seconds to go to seal the 57-55 Pilot victory.
Bethel steps aside for a couple of weeks before traveling to Rochester Hills, Mich., to take on the Rochester Christian Crimson on Tuesday, Dec. 31, at 4 p.m.
