Box Score MISHAWAKA, Ind. ---The RV Bethel Pilots (4-0, 3-0) made history Friday night with their defeat of the RV Lourdes University Gray Wolves (4-2, 1-1) in five sets (23-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-13, 15-8) in the Goodman Gymnasium.
With the win, Bethel retains its first place spot in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference.
Thomas Dunkley led the team in kills (23) while hitting at a .474 efficiency and adding two service aces.
Santana Roybal-Benson was a force at the net, serving as Bethel's block leader with six.
McGwire Eigenrauch totaled 40 assists while
Eduardo Kerkoski totaled 13 digs.
While the Pilots hit .250 as a team, outperforming Lourdes' .125 hitting efficiency, Bethel's attacking and service errors cost them sets one and two.
As the third set neared its conclusion,
Ling Pak Him earned the first set for the Pilots following termination of an assist from
Eduardo Kerkoski (25-23).
The Pilots' best showing of the evening came in the fourth, with Bethel defeating the Gray Wolves by double digits (25-13).
An early five-point run pushed the Pilots ahead, as Bethel capitalized on multiple errors by Lourdes alongside a stuff block by
Jibbe Boeren and
Thomas Dunkley.
Thomas Dunkley and
Ling Pak Him were crucial players in the fifth, serving as kill leaders. An attacking error by Lourdes gave Bethel the reverse sweep and 15-8 fifth set win.
The Pilots will look to further their historic season start tomorrow against the Mount Vernon Nazarene Cougars in the Goodman Gymnasium. First serve is set for 2 PM.
